How Thanksgiving squares work
Everyone claims squares on a 10×10 grid before kickoff. When you lock the board, the digits 0–9 are drawn at random across the top and down the side, and at the end of each quarter the last digit of each team's score points to the winning square. No football knowledge required, which is exactly why it works across three generations at one table. The full rundown is on the squares rules page.
Two switches make a holiday board livelier. Every score wins crowns a square each time the score changes, not just at the quarters — more winners, more yelling from the kitchen. Reverse winners lets the square with the two digits flipped win, too. Smaller crowd? Pick the 25-square board so it fills up.
Three games, one group chat
- One board per game. Set them all up the night before and drop every link in the family chat at once — people can play one game or all of them.
- Mix the games. Squares for the early game while the turkey's in, a prediction sheet for the night game, and game-day bingo for the relatives who came for the food.
- Lock at kickoff. Locking draws the digits with the time stamped on the board, so nobody can claim the fix was in.
- Prefer paper? Print a free squares grid — or run it online and let the scores fill in themselves.

How do football squares work on Thanksgiving?
Everyone claims squares on a 10×10 grid before kickoff. When the board locks, the digits 0–9 are drawn at random across the top and side, and at the end of each quarter the last digit of each team's score points to that quarter's winning square. It's pure luck, so the whole family has the same shot.
Can we run squares for every game?
Yes — make one board per game and drop all the links in the family group chat; people can play one game or all of them. Set them up the night before so nobody is doing it with a carving knife in hand.
Does it cost anything?
No. KickoffPools is free, needs no app or account for players, and never collects, holds, or pays out money — winners get bragging rights until next Thanksgiving.
